Natural vs Relaxed
Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 9:59 PM
For years there has always been a a debate between the luxurious relaxed coif sistah and the happily napngo natural sistah. Both types of women hold very good arguments as to why they choose their preference. I am divided between the two because I've had the chance to do both. As a child and up until my pre-teen years I was fabulously natural. As I neared my teen years I wanted to wear my hair straight and getting my hair pressed for two hours and it swelling back up in two minutes began to get on my nerves. It must have gotten on my mothers nerves also because she was more than willing to relax my hair! I fell in love with relaxers the minute I saw its creamy foundation! I knew we would have a loooooooooooooooong and happy relationship. I mean it was awesome! It took half the time as pressing and didnt need to be redone as often ! As I got older I began to do my own relaxers(Big Mistake) ! The more I did it the more my hair began to become weak and break. I didn't understand how relaxer could betray me like that after our history!! I debated going back natural but I didnt quite know if I could handle it. After I studied hair in Cosmetology School  I learned that products dont harm hair;the person using the product does. So the whole time I was thinking relaxers betrayed me when I was really the one betraying myself by overprocessing my hair. As a stylist I deal with all kinds of hair types such as relaxed, natural, and textured.  Ive heard every excuse and story why each will never try the other because insome way, shape or form its not good for your hair. And to be completely honest Ive seen damaged relaxed hair, damaged natural hair and damaged textured hair. The type of hair you choose to have does not damage your hair;the way you treat your hair does! So I personally feel your decision to be natural or not should not be based just upon wanting healthy hair because if you go natural and still abuse your hair all you will have is damaged natural hair! Duh! Lol! The decision should be based upon your personality and lifestyle. Im a glam girl. I like the glitz and glamour and straight hair and I feel that relaxed hair fits my lifestyle a little better. Since I do love straight hair and I don't have enough time to straighten my hair, natural doesnt work for me. Even though I dont choose to natural, I respect and love those that do. I view hair as I do race their soooo many different types and they all are unique and beautiful iin there own way. So as women lets respect each others choices and embrace our individuality! And lets not debate natural and relaxed but lets look at the bigger picture; healthy vs damaged! Please leave feedback! I accept and respect all opinions!
